History of Lentor Hills Road at Ang Mo Kio

Ang Mo Kio AMK is a residential town and a planning area situated in the North-East Region of Singapore. The neighbourhood sits in the south-western corner of the region and borders Yishun on its north, Serangoon on its east, Sengkang on its north-east, the Central Water Catchment in its west, and Bishan in its south.

The name Ang Mo Kio is a Hokkien term that translates to ‘red-haired man’s bridge’ with references to the bridge across the Kallang River. Another narrative suggests that the area initially had 9 bridges linking the rural area leading to the name Kow Tiao Kio which means 9 bridges in Hokkien.

Before urbanisation, Ang Mo Kio was largely undeveloped and was mainly an agricultural area with a large part covered in rubber estates, swamps and secondary forest. In the early 1900s, the rubber boom brought about cultivation, leading to a population increase in Ang Mo Kio.

In 1973, Ang Mo Kio was redeveloped by the HDB into the seventh new satellite town. The project was completed by 1980, and the first three town councils in Singapore were subsequently established in AMK 1986- to date, they remain the second level of administration.

Today, Ang Mo Kio houses more than 143,800 HDB residents in its over 50,733 flats. The houses are well connected to an array of amenities and facilities, creating a live, work, play and learn environment.

New amenities and housing units are added to revamp the area and meet the resident’s current lifestyle needs. In 2016, Ang Mo Kio Court BTO development became the first to have 3G flats alongside family and elderly-friendly facilities. Besides, plans are ongoing to make AMK the country’s first walking and cycling town as part of Singapore’s efforts to become a car-lite.

The Ang Mo Kio of today resembles the neighbouring towns- it is vastly urbanised with a few hints of its original state. Around the neighbourhood are many parks; Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park, Ang Mo Kio Town Garden West and Ang Mo Kio Town Garden East inline within Singapore’s green initiative. Many more important amenities are found around the neighbourhood, creating a friendly living environment for families.
